FALLEN SOLDIER TO BE RECOGNIZED AS U.S. CITIZEN
Congressman Rangel to Speak at Citizenship Day Naturalization Ceremony
NEW YORK, – The family of a U.S. soldier killed in Iraq will be presented with his Certificate of Naturalization during a special Citizenship Day naturalization ceremony on Monday, September 17. Born in the Dominican Republic, Cpl. Juan Alcantara was posthumously awarded U.S. citizenship after he was killed in action while serving with the U.S. Army. Congressman Charles Rangel will present the certificate to Cpl. Alcantara’s family.
Also during the ceremony, to be held at the City College of New York’s Shepard Hall, 250 New York area residents will take the Oath of Allegiance to become U.S. citizens. The Dominican Republic, Kazakhstan, China, Iran, Japan, and Mauritius are just a few of the 51 nations represented by these applicants for citizenship.
This special Citizenship Day event is being held by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and the City University of New York to honor the sacrifice of Cpl. Alcantara and to celebrate the hundreds of thousands of men, women, and children who will take another step towards fulfilling the American dream by becoming U.S. citizens this year.
