U Nonimmigrant Interim Relief Final Filing Date Extended

WASHINGTON—U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced today that it is extending the filing deadline for the expiration of the U Nonimmigrant Interim Relief Program. Individuals are now encouraged to file Form I-918, Petition for U Nonimmigrant Status, by February 1, 2010. The filing extension will allow affected individuals the opportunity to file Form I-918 in a timely manner.
On December 14, 2009, USCIS issued an Update titled “U Nonimmigrant Interim Relief Recipients Reminded to Apply for U Visa - Temporary Benefits Set to Expire December 31, 2009.” Prior to that Update, on November 3, 2009, USCIS sent notices to individuals potentially affected by the termination of the interim relief program. The individual notices advised applicants about the upcoming change and reminded them to file Form I-918 prior to December 31, 2009, in order to remain eligible for U nonimmigrant interim relief benefits. Although new notices will not be mailed to potentially affected individuals, this Update also modifies the deadline in the previous mailed notice.
This Update replaces the December 14, 2009, Update and extends the filing deadline for temporary benefits from December 31, 2009, to February 1, 2010.
